12 May – Despite the casting of Hugh Jackman as the titular vampire hunter in Stephen Sommers' action horror, "Van Helsing" turned out to be a critical disappointment for Universal, which could be the reason behind their new two-year production deal with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the writing duo behind Paramount's "Transformers" and "Star Trek" franchises, as their first projects under the new deal will include reimaginings of the monster movie "Van Helsing" and "The Mummy", according to Total Film. The "Van Helsing" reboot will take Academy Award nominee Tom Cruise on board as both the film's producer and lead star while Kurtzman and Orci will pen the script. Considering that the star is known to run a tight ship when he is also sitting on the producer's chair, the film seems set to be free of the productions issues that plagued the original. However, for "The Mummy", Kurtzman and Orci have hired Jon Spaihts as its writer instead. Coincidentally, both films were originally directed by Stephen Sommers. "Van Helsing" brought together the likes of Dracula, the Wolfman and Frankenstein's Monster as monsters that Gabriel Van Helsing (Jackman) has to hunt down, assisted by Anna Valerious (Kate Beckinsale), a young woman who is determined to kill Dracula to avenge her family. On the other hand, "The Mummy" a loose remake of the 1932 film of the same name, about a group of archeologists led by Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) who accidentally unleash the immortal mummy, Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) and must stop him from laying waste upon the Earth. Meanwhile, catch Cruise rocking out in "Rock of Ages", which debuts in cinemas on 14 June in Malaysia and 16 August in Singapore, followed by "One Shot", to be released in both countries on 20 December.
