"The Grey" leads the pack

"The Grey" is a story of alpha male versus alpha wolf, and who could be manlier than Liam Neeson in action?

31 Jan – You would be forgiven if you did not think that "The Grey" would have enough power to take the first place in the U.S. weekend box office charts, but it did, proving that with a clear premise as well as a popular actor doing what he knows best, a movie would have what it takes to debut at US$19.6 million. After "Taken" and "Unknown", this action-thriller sees Liam Neeson against the wild instead of humans, although in comparison to the two, the opening of "The Grey" turned out to be the lowest. Last weekend's top, the supernatural action flick "Underworld: Awakening" has dipped to second, however, it is also the franchise's best, having grossed more than the previous movies within 10 days. Third comes "One For The Money", an adaptation of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novel starring Katherine Heigl, at the North American box office for the weekend (26-29 Jan) according to online tracker, Box Office Mojo.

As for Malaysia, "The Grey" has yet to be released, leaving "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" to continue taking first place in the weekend box office, while "Underworld: Awakening" maintains second. The holiday cheer may have registered moviegoers in a good mood, hence the higher numbers for the family-adventure movie as opposed to Kate Beckinsale massacring vampires and lycans. Last but definitely not least is "Ah Beng The Movie: 3 Wishes", a local movie starring popular MY FM DJ, Jack Lim, at third place.

In Singapore, "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" continues to enjoy success, taking first place in the weekend box office chart despite the release of George Clooney's Oscar-nominated movie, "The Descendants". Hot on its heels it "We Not Naughty", a local comedy about children who are not so hot to come to heel with their parents, while another local movie, "Dance Dance Dragon" takes third place, which makes sense given the recently over Chinese New Year week.

In Malaysia, other releases over the weekend were "Chronicle", "Thandhava", "Agneepath" and "Sumpahan Kum Kum".

On the other hand, other releases in Singapore were "Agneepath", "The Descendants", "The Monk", "I Love Hong Kong 2012", and "One For The Money".
