11 Sept – Last weekend (6 – 9 Sept) was one of the worst ones for the U.S. box office, with two lousy new releases and a handful of mediocre holdovers. Despite the ensemble cast of new entries "The Cold Light Of Day" and "The Words", both saw lacklustre placing in the charts, former in 13th and the latter in 4th while the top three are all repeats of last week. "The Possession" repeated in first place with a total gross of US$33.2 million, while "Lawless" repeated in second place. "The Expendables 2" repeated in third place, which marked the fourth weekend in a row that Lionsgate held the top spot (twice for "The Expendables 2", twice for "The Possession"). In Malaysia, "The Possession" rose to first place in light of the subpar releases, overtaking last week's first, "The Expendables 2". Mabrouk El Mechri's "The Cold Light Of Day" also opened in the country last weekend, and similarly, it did not make it into the top three, as "The Watch" repeated third place. "Immortals" lead Henry Cavill stars in "The Cold Light Of Day" as a young man named Will Shaw whose family has been kidnapped while on a vacation in Spain. Bruce Willis also stars as his father who is actually a CIA agent while Sigourney Weaver stars as a fellow CIA agent who wants to help Will, but ultimately has a secret agenda of her own.
Last weekend in Singapore was also a mediocre affair, but Malaysians will be pleased to know that KRU Studios' historical fantasy drama, "29 Februari", saw release there over the weekend as it is not often that a Malaysian film is distributed in Singapore. This may also be the reason why the Edry Abdul Halim-directorial did not make it into the top three, which are filled by "Ted", "Step Up Revolution" and "ParaNorman" in that particular order. For Malaysia, new movies that opened last week were "Chernobyl Diaries", "Hantu Air", "I Miss You", "Salam Cinta", "Mugamoodi (2D)", "The Cold Light Of Day", "Paagan" and "Raaz 3". For Singapore, new movies that opened last week were "Hope Springs (2D)", "The Scent", "Seven Something (2D)", "The Woman In The Fifth (2D)", "Raaz 3", "Wolf Children (2D)", "29 Februari (2D)", "Gangs Of Wasseypur Part 2" and "Footnote".
