13 Mar – If anything, children's animated movies are ones to demonstrate that miracles can happen, as "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" managed to remain at the top of the weekend U.S. box office (8 to 11 Mar), despite the opening of Andrew Stanton's mega-budget sci-fi epic "John Carter" on that same week. The total gross of "The Lorax" is currently US $121.7 million, which is slightly lower than the team's marketed effort, "Despicable Me". The aforementioned "John Carter" comes second with an opening smaller than any other similar movie from the beginning of the year, which can be blamed on the poor marketing by Disney. In third place is last week's second, "Project X" by Nima Nourizadeh and produced by "The Hangover" director Todd Phillips which may see a sequel. In Malaysia, Barsoom is the place to be as "John Carter" opens in first place, way above "The Lorax". Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' 11-volume Barsoom series of novels, the movie tells the story of a former Confederate captain named John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) who is mysteriously transported to Mars ("Barsoom") where he becomes part of a conflict between the various nations of the planet. In second place was the locally-made animation "Seefood", which saw positive reception overseas before finally swimming its way to cinemas last weekend. "The Lorax" charted third, rounding up the weekend as a family-oriented one. "John Carter" also opened first in Singapore while "The Lorax" eased into second place. It seemed that the box office competition was mainly kept between these two films due to the lack of blockbuster releases until the highly anticipated "The Hunger Games" on 22 March. On the other hand, the relatively small-time war film "Act Of Valor" maintained a solid standing as it continued to remain in the top three for the weekend gone by. In Malaysia, other new releases over the weekend were "The Prescription Paper", "Bunohan", "Kahaani" and "Maasi". On the other hand, other releases in Singapore were, "Timeless Love", "Mae Nak", "Kahaani" and "A Simple Life".
