"Into Darkness" overtakes "Iron Man 3"

Benedict Cumberbatch plays John Harrison, the wanted criminal that Kirk and co. are hunting down.

21 May – After sneaking its way into second place with its sneak preview screenings last week, "Star Trek Into Darkness" finally and easily opened in top spot over the weekend (16 to 19 May 2013) in US, Malaysia and Singapore. Although the J. J. Abrams-directed sequel grossed about USD 70.6 million in US, it was far from the box office sensation that distributors expected it to be, seeing that it made as much as 2009's "Star Trek" did, despite the film's approach of promising more-of-the-same and offering something new.

"Star Trek Into Darkness" sees Kirk leading his crew on a manhunt for terrorist John Harrison after Harrison massacred thousands of people, including someone important to the Captain. However, there is much more to Harrison than meets the eye, and Kirk is told that the Federation may know more than they let on.

In second place in all three countries is "Iron Man 3", or "Marvel's Iron Man 3" to Malaysians and Singaporeans.

Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" did better in US during its opening week, having taken second place, as it opened in third place in Singapore and fourth place in Malaysia. The film plummeted to third place in US, but still performed better than Leonardo DiCaprio's "The Departed" and "Shutter Island". Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel of the same name, "The Great Gatsby" follows the journey of would-be writer Nick Carraway, who arrives in New York City only to get caught up in the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits, starring his mysterious, party-giving millionaire neighbour, Jay Gatsby and Nick's cousin Daisy.

The film also made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival this week. Click on the image below to view the video of the stars at the event.

"The Great Gatsby" stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton and Tobey Maguire.

Last but not least, rounding up the top three in Malaysia is "O.M.K. (Oh Mak Kau!)".

Other new movies that opened last week in Malaysia are "Hummingbird", "Aurangzeb" and "Neram".

Other new movies that opened last week in Singapore are "My Phone Sex Partner", "The Incredible Truth", "Guilty Of Romance" and "Populaire".
