Jodie Foster comes out

Jodie Foster finally made her sexual orientation public in her acceptance speech at the 70th Golden Globe Awards.

14 Jan – The recent Golden Globe Awards has seen many acceptance speeches given, but the speech given by Jodie Foster after winning the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award was the most memorable, seeing that it revealed much of her private life which she was known to be very protective of.

According to News Straits Times, 50-year-old Oscar winner Jodie came clean with her sexual preferences in her speech.

"I hope you're not disappointed that there won't be a big coming-out speech tonight. I already did my coming-out about a thousand years ago", she said, in reference to her sexual orientation as a lesbian.

She further joked on the public's perception of celebrities coming out of the closet "with a press conference, a fragrance and a prime-time reality show. ... You just might be surprised but I am not Honey Boo Boo Child. Please don't cry, because my reality show is so boring."

Jodie's acceptance speech set tongues wagging both online and in the real world. Twitter is alive with people calling her courageous and moving while others suggested she could play a more active role as a role model for the LGBT community.

Fellow celebrity Ricky Martin reacted to her speech by tweeting: "@Jody Foster On your terms. Its your time! Not before nor after. Its when it feels right." The Puerto Rican pop singer and actor himself came out of the closet in 2010.

Her relationship status as a new single lesbian was also revealed. She thanked her long time partner and production manager, Cydney Bernard for staying with her these past 20 years and co-mothering two sons together.

Jodie Foster and Christoph Waltz worked together in Roman Polanski's "Carnage".

More surprisingly, Jodie also appeared to be dropping hints of her retirement from acting in her acceptance speech. However, she later clarified backstage to reporters: "I could never stop acting. You'd have to drag me behind a team of horses. I'd like to be directing tomorrow. I'm more into it than I have ever been."

She also explained backstage the reason she revealed so much of her private life in her Golden Globe Awards acceptance speech. "The speech kind of speaks for itself. It's a big moment. I wanted to say what's most in my heart."

Jodie was last seen in Roman Polanski's black comedy film "Carnage" in 2011. She will next appear in Neill Blomkamp's upcoming science fiction film "Elysium", starring alongside Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley.
