9 Jul – Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim" has received some rather negative feedback from critics after early screenings, but it has also won the heart and admiration of the infamous rap artist Kanye West. In a twist of his old stint with Taylor Swift at the 2009 Video Music Awards, he complimented the film through his Twitter account, saying, "I saw a pre-screening of Pacific Rim yesterday and it's easily one of my favorite movies of all time." West gave compliments for "Pacific Rim" in one more tweet to his 9 million Twitter followers, "This is not another 'Robot' movie."
When the stars of the film, including Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam, were asked by ITN about hearing about Kanye West's claim that it was "one of his favourite movies of all time", they were all smiles. "He loves it apparently, and that's great!" exclaimed Idris Elba, "He's got great taste, and he's a visionary. So I was really excited that he tweeted about it." "Oh did he?" asked Charlie Hunnam, "That is very cool! High praise, indeed." When Idris Elba was asked if he could tweet him back, he said, "Of course!" and promised to tweet the rapper about how he loves his new album. "Pacific Rim" revolves around an alien invasion of Earth, which forces humans to design massive robots to fight back and has a budget set at more than USD 180 million (RM 577 million). The film will open on 11 July 2013 in Malaysia and Singapore.
