4 Feb – A cinema located in a building along Jalan Raja Laut, Kuala Lumpur, which was raided today by the Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) has been discovered to have been illegally securing their water supply by tapping into the local water main. The discovery was made by Syabas who as of today, had cut off the water supply and said that the illegal pipe works installed by the cinema owner who is also the building owner, had caused Syabas a revenue loss totalling to RM221,748.70. The building also houses various other establishments such as a cybercafé, a snooker centre and a car-wash service which are all operated by the building owner. Suspicions first arose 6 months ago in July 2012 when the water supply of the premises was cut off after an outstanding water bill amounting to RM32,500 was accumulated by the premises. As mentioned in The Star, Syabas projects and NRW (Non-revenue water) division executive director Yusof Badawi said, "We did our investigations first to ascertain that there was an illegal connection. We discovered that the owners had made two illegal connections using galvanised iron pipes, each measuring 50mm, that were connected to the water main without a meter." Moving forward, Syabas plans to file a claim against the cinema operator cum building owner while SPAN (National Water Services Commission) will be filing a civil claim. The management of the cinema could not be reached for comments at time of publication. In light of the current event, it is expected that the 30 over year old historical building which currently encompasses two cinema halls may cease all showtimes until further notice. Jalan Raja Laut had been home to two popular cinemas, the Federal Cinema and its neighbour, The Capitol, until the latter closed down over a decade ago.
