Lesbian romance film takes Cannes

(L-R) Adele Exarchopoulos, director Abdellatif Kechiche and Lea Seydoux take the Palme d'Or for "Blue Is The Warmest Color: The Life Of Adele".

27 May – The 66th annual Cannes Film Festival concluded with the event's top prize, the Palme d'Or, going to "Blue Is The Warmest Color: The Life Of Adele", a lesbian romance film directed by Abdellatif Kechiche.

In addition to the director, the jury headed by Steven Spielberg, handed the award to the film's two stars, Adele Exarchopoulos and Lea Seydoux.

When asked why "Blue Is The Warmest Color: The Life Of Adele" deserved to win the award, Spielberg said, "The film is a great love story that made us all feel privileged to be invited to see this story of deep love and deep heartbreak. The director didn't put any constraints on the narrative."

Adele Exarchopoulos and Lea Seydoux play lovers in "Blue Is The Warmest Color: The Life Of Adele".

Adapted from Julie Maroh's graphic novel, the film is a coming-of-age tale about a young high school student named Adele (Exarchopolous), as she attempts to come to terms with her sexuality. After a failed relationship with a classmate, Thomas (Jeremie Laheurte), Adele finds that which was missing in her heart with Emma (Seydoux), a blue-haired, older art student who she chances upon at a lesbian bar.

The Grand Prix, Cannes' second most prestigious award, went to Joel and Ethan Coen's 1960s folk tale, "Inside Llewyn Davis". Starring Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, and Justin Timberlake, the film is a story of a singer-songwriter who navigates New York's folk music scene in the 1960s.

On a related note, Singaporean director Anthony Chen does his country proud by taking the Camera d'Or for "Ilo Ilo". Set during the Asia financial crisis in 1997, the film is about a Singaporean family and their new maid.
