"Percy Jackson" led the Malaysian box office.

15 Aug – Despite the film getting mixed reviews, the second instalment in the "Percy Jackson" series took down other new films like "The Smurfs 2", and took the top spot at the box office last weekend (8-11 August).

"Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters", starring Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario and Stanley Tucci, is about the son of Poseidon and his friends who embark on a quest to the Sea of Monsters to find the mythical Golden Fleece, while trying to stop an ancient evil from rising.

"R.I.P.D" fell two spots behind in third place, followed by "The Conjuring", "The Wolverine" and "Pacific Rim" in fourth, fifth and sixth place.

"Elysium" is the top film in the U.S. box office last weekend.

In Singapore, however, "The Smurfs 2" reigns at the top of the weekend box office, while other new releases including "The Conjuring" and "R.I.P.D." came in second and third place, respectively.

"The Smurfs 2" is the sequel of the beloved animated blue creatures, and it tells the story Smurfette, who has been kidnapped by Gargamel since she knows a secret spell that can turn the evil sorcerer's newest creation called the Naughties into real Smurfs.

In the United States, "Elysium" took the top spot. The film is set in the year 2154, where the very wealthy live on a man-made space station, while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth; and a man (Matt Damon) takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.

"We're the Millers", "Planes" and "Percy Jackson" took second, third and fourth place.

Other new movies that opened over the weekend in Malaysia are "Thalaivaa", "Tales From The Dark Part 2", "Lemak Kampung Santan", "Adnan Sempit 3" and "Chennai Express".
