Princess Diana film criticised by former lover

28 Aug – Princess Diana's former lover, Dr. Hasnat Khan, has publicly made known his disapproval of the new "Diana" film, which examines their relationship and called it "completely wrong".

The British Pakistani heart and lung surgeon also denied that he gave implicit approval to the producers of the film or to Kate Snell, author of the book "Diana - Her Last Love".

"It is a complete lie. I have never given any approval. I have never met or talked or written to Bernstein (the producer of the film) and I have never given any approval in a direct or indirect manner," said Hasnat Khan, whose birth name is Hasnat Ahmad Khan.

Khan, 54, who was once nicknamed "Mr Wonderful" by the late princess, has long maintained a dignified silence about the details of his relationship with Princess Diana. However, in light of the film's upcoming release, he revealed his relationship to The Mail.

"There wasn't any hierarchy in our relationship. She wasn't a Princess and I wasn't a doctor", said Khan. "We were friends, and normal people stand like friends with each other."

The relationship between the princess and the cardiothoracic surgeon broke down weeks before the former's death. The break up was due to Khan being unable to commit to marriage and his desire to avoid the media's scrutiny.

"Even after two years, the relationship wasn't leading to a meaningful progression or conclusion and that was the main stress on both of us," he said.

This is not the first time the film has seen controversy. Earlier this year, there was some controversy in regards to the guest list to the film's screening as among the invited were the deceased princess' former butler Paul Burrel and Mohamed al-Fayed, father of Diana's late lover Dodi Fayed.

Word of the doctor's dismissal of the film comes ahead of its premiere on 5 September. "Diana" is directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel and details the last two years of the life of Diana, Princess of Wales after her divorce from Prince Charles and her relationships with heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan and Dodi Fayed.
