Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as Doctor Strange.

28 Oct – Currently well-known for his Emmy award-winning portrayal of fictional detective Sherlock Holmes on the small screen, Benedict Cumberbatch is about to join the 'Marvel'ous world of superheroes as he has been cast for the titular role of upcoming movie, "Doctor Strange".

Marvel has reportedly chosen the English actor to star in the movie as the caped alter ego of Stephen Vincent Strange, Deadline reports.

"Doctor Strange" will be one of the movies from Marvel's long list of comic book movies to be released starting from next year. A Marvel Comics character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Doctor Strange is a former neurosurgeon who damages his hands in an accident. Desperate for a cure, his search leads him to the discovery of magic in the Marvel universe. With his newfound knowledge and superpowers, he becomes the Sorcerer Supreme, the protector of Earth against magical threats.

The movie will be directed by Scott Derrickson, who previously helmed "Sinister" and "Deliver Us from Evil". Jon Spaihts, writer of "Prometheus", is said to be rewriting Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer's original script for it.

Cumberbatch can be seen next in "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies", coming out in cinemas this coming December 2014.
