14 Mar – In spite of the success enjoyed by "The Lego Movie" at the box office, writers/directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord will not be returning to direct the sequel, and the reins will be turned over to animated co-director Chris McKay instead. Collider reported that Warner Bros. has set Chris McKay to direct the sequel to "The Lego Movie", which has so far grossed USD 361 million worldwide. McKay was the animation co-director on the first film. Although Miller and Lord will not be returning to direct the sequel, they will remain on board as its producers. At the same time, McKay is also negotiating for a first-look producer deal at the studio.
Meanwhile, screenwriting duties will be passed on to Michelle Morgan and Jared Stern. McKay is known for his work on the Cartoon Network series "Robot Chicken", for which he won an Emmy for, "Moral Orel" and "Titan Maximum". The yet untitled "The Lego Movie 2" will be a direct sequel, but the studio is also contemplating a spinoff film that focuses on Lego's "Ninjago" series.
