8 Aug – Sony is planning to release a "Spider-Man" spin-off focusing on a female superhero that is set to release in the year 2017. With Lisa Joy hired to pen the female-driven "Spiderman" spin-off, it is not yet certain which female lead will be the centre of the story, reports Time. However a few characters that used to appear in the "Spiderman" universe comes to mind such as, Spider Woman, Black Cat and Silver Sable. However, many fans are eyeing two characters; Jessica Drew who is the first Spider Woman in Marvel comics and Felicia Hardy also known as the Black Cat, one of the notable female villains that appears in the "Spider-Man" comics.
Marvel studios president, Kevin Fiege said that he intended to bring in more female-centred superhero films similar to "Cat Woman" following the success of movies with strong female leads such as "Frozen", "Maleficient", "The Hunger Games" and the recently released "Lucy". With two other spin-offs focusing on Spider-Man's villains, "Sinister Six" and "Venom" dated for 2016 and 2017 respectively; Marvel is on a roll to further expand the cinematic universe of "Spider-Man". On a side note, Sony has pushed the release of "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" to a later date, from 2016 to 2018.
