Tokyo Grand Prix for "Heaven Knows What"

3 Nov –The closure of the 27th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) was marked with the handing out of the Tokyo Grand Prix award to the best film screening in the competition section, "Heaven Knows What".

The US-France co-production by brothers, Joshua and Benny Safdie, followed the real-life account of the film's lead, Arielle Holmes, about a drug addict finding love on the streets of New York.

The best director award also went to the filmmaker duo that had before Tokyo, screened the movie at New York, Toronto and premiered it at Venice.

On picking the winner of out the 15 films screening under the competition section, head of the jury, James Gunn ("Guardians of the Galaxy") said, "This was the movie that got us really excited and had inspired us the most."

Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov's Bulgaria-Greece production, "The Lesson" took home the Special Jury Prize of USD20,000.

Rie Miyazawa won Best Actress for "Pale Moon".

Receiving USD5,000 each, the Best Actor awards went to Japanese actress Rie Miyazawa for "Pale Moon" and Polish actor Robert Wieckiewicz for "The Mighty Angel".

Under the Best Asian Future Film Award category, the Iranian film by Amirhossein Asgari, "Borderless" won USD10,000.

Two Malaysian films were also screened at the TIFF this year under the Competition and Asian Future categories, they were "Rivers of Exploding Durians" by Edmund Yeo and "Nova"/"Terbaik Dari Langit" by Nik Amir Mustapha, respectively.

A special honour was bestowed upon Takeshi Kitano and Tim Burton with the inaugural Samurai Award.

The closing film for this year's festival run was the live-action manga adaptation, "Parasyte".
