"In the Heart of the Sea" making waves

"In the Heart of the Sea" shows signs of sinking?

16 Dec – Ron Howard's "In the Heart of the Sea" finally opened at the U.S. weekend box office for 10 to 13 December 2015.

The movie seems to be getting a lacklustre welcome despite the big names headlining it and its epic story. With its weak opening, the movie already shows signs of going underwater, though not all is lost, as it still proves to be a crowd magnet in some markets.

Unable to take down the reigning champion, the movie opened behind "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2", which still stood at number one, making another USD11.4 million domestically in the U.S., based on Box Office Mojo stats.

This makes it the fourth week spent at the top spot for the Jennifer Lawrence-starrer. The movie, which cost USD160 million to produce, has grossed USD571.9 million worldwide.

"In the Heart of the Sea" sailed in at number two. Despite the presence of lead actor Chris Hemsworth ("Thor") and director Ron Howard ("A Beautiful Mind"), the biographical adventure thriller only managed to rake in USD11 million at the U.S. cinemas on its opening weekend. So far worldwide, it's only made USD53.1 million against its USD100 million budget.

"The Good Dinosaur" may be shaping up to be Pixar's first box office loss but it is adamantly guarding its spot on the third place. Arlo and Spot continued their adventure and made another USD10.3 million. This adds on to its USD168.2 million worldwide gross, slowly gaining back its USD200 million production budget.

"Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie" brings some Christmas magic.

Over in Malaysia, there are no changes in the movies' standing as "In the Heart of the Sea" still has the number one spot in moviegoers' hearts and on the box office chart. "The Good Dinosaur" stayed put at second place while "Point Break", which will open in the U.S. on Christmas Day, did not break away from third place.

"Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie" opened in Singapore just in time for the Christmas crowd. In Malaysia it only opened at fourth but here it debuted at number one, pushing fellow animated movie "The Good Dinosaur" down to number two. "Point Break" stayed put at number three for another week.

Other new releases in Malaysia last weekend are "A Second Chance", "Eetti", "Urumeen", "Who's Your Daddy", "Keranda Tok Wan Terbang", "Love the Coopers", "She Remembers, He Forgets", "Scandal - The Comeback" and "The Last Women Standing".

New movies in Singapore that opened last weekend include "Eetti", "Bone Tomahawk", "Cooties", "The Vanished Murderer", "Ghost Theatre" and "Love the Coopers".
