"Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" placed first in the U.S, M'sia and S'pore. |
22 Sep – "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" finally debuted in the U.S. last weekend and made a straight dash to number one, while also maintaining its top spot positions at the Malaysia and Singapore weekend box office for 17 to 20 September.
The sequel to 2014's "The Maze Runner", with Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Ki Hong Lee, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and more reprising their roles, made an opening weekend gross of USD30.3 million. Worldwide it has now collected more than USD108.3 million.
Johnny Depp-starrer, "Black Mass", a biopic based on infamous Irish mob and FBI informant, James "Whitey" Bulger, opened at number two with a weekend gross of USD22.6 million. Depicting the mobster himself, Depp, who earlier this year received not-so-favourable critiques for starring in a box office bomb, managed to redeem himself, proving he is still a top-notch actor when given a solid movie to star in.
M. Night Shyamalan's "The Visit" added another USD11.5 million to its gross last weekend, bringing its total worldwide gross to USD50.5 million.

"Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" is still hot in Malaysia as it topped the weekend box office once again. Capturing number two was newly-released local movie, "Polis Evo". Since opening on the 17th in 98 cinemas across Malaysia and Brunei, the movie has managed to collect an impressive RM2.5 million in just four days. Meanwhile, "The Transporter Refueled" lost charge and went down yet another spot, landing at number three.
Singapore also still has "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" blazing at the top spot while Pixar animation "Inside Out" remained at number two. Denis Villeneuve's "Sicario", starring Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro, opened at number three.
Last weekend, other movies that also opened in Malaysia were "Maya", "Make Me Shudder 3", "The Visit", "Sicario: The Mexican Hitman", "Love Detective", "Pawn Sacrifice", "Two by Two", "Kapsul", "Everest", "Trisha Illana Nayanthara", "Katti Batti" and "Guia in Love".
Singapore's new releases for last weekend include "Trisha Illana Nayanthara", "49-0", "Katti Batti", "Maya", "3688", "Visions", "Sicario", "The Visit", "Love Live! The School Idol Movie", "A Tale Of Three Cities", "Assassination" and "Black Mass".
