"Minions" now top animated movie

"Minions" finally opens in the U.S., shoots straight for number one.

14 Jul – "Minions" is still making millions at the box office. After making waves overseas with their incoherent babble and general wackiness, the yellow-tinged supervillain worshippers finally made their way to the U.S.

The "Despicable Me" spinoff is definitely one of the top animated movies currently around as not only did it open at number one at the U.S. but also still placed top three at the Malaysia and Singapore weekend box office charts for 9 to 12 July.

On top of that, its opening gross of USD115.7 million has made it the second-best animated movie opening ever, based on Rentrak stats, trailing just behind 2007's "Shrek The Third"'s debut gross of USD121.63 million and ahead of the USD110.31 million grossed by 2010's "Toy Story 3".

Globally, "Minions" has crossed the USD400 million mark as it opened in 30 new markets last weekend and placed first at every single one, according to Deadline. The only countries the banana-coloured henchmen didn't open at number one were Australia – it was conquered by "Terminator Genisys" – and India, where the country's most expensive movie, the epic "Baahubali", showed some muscle at the box office.

The "Minions'" debut knocked Pixar's highly acclaimed "Inside Out" off its pedestal, all the way down to number three with its earning of USD17.1 million over the weekend. Sandwiched between the two animated movies is "Jurassic World", still clawing on to the second place with a weekend gross of USD 18.1 million.

"Terminator Genisys" still received well in M'sia and S'pore.

Meanwhile, there were no changes to Malaysia's box office chart last weekend as "Terminator Genisys" still conquered number one, leaving number two to still be infested by the bug-eyed "Minions" and number three still inhabited by "Jurassic World".

Over in Singapore, "Ted 2" had climbed to the number one spot, knocking "Terminator Genisys" down to number two. "Minions" maintained its number three hold. No new releases were able to surpass any of the current chart-toppers.

Movies that opened in Malaysia last weekend were "Baahubali", "Harbinger Down", "Hollywood Adventures", "The Monk Comes Down The Mountain", "Pound of Flesh", "American Heist", "Return to Sender", "Sardaar Ji" and "A Little Chaos".

Singapore's new releases last weekend include "Baahubali", "Ex Machina", "Ju-On 4: The Final Curse", "Magic Mike XXL", "Survivor", "Burying the Ex", "Crayon Shinchan My Moving Story: Cactus Attack", "Hollywood Adventures" and "The Monk Comes Down The Mountain".
