19 May – Musical comedy "Pitch Perfect 2" emerged as last weekend's chart topper as it pitch-slapped other competitions off the top of the U.S., Malaysia and Singapore box office charts for 14 to 17 May. The a cappella sequel sees the return of Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Brittany Snow reprising their roles as Beca, Fat Amy and Chloe along with the rest of the Barden Bellas. "Pitch Perfect 2" hit all the right notes as it opened to a USD69.2 million gross in the U.S. last weekend, the biggest opening ever for a musical. With its perfect debut, the movie is on its way to overtake its 2012 predecessor, "Pitch Perfect", which was the second highest grossing music comedy (USD115.3 million) after Jack Black's "School of Rock" (USD131.3 million). Another new release, "Mad Max: Fury Road" paved its way to the second spot on its opening weekend, collecting USD45.4 million. The Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron-starrer has been garnering positive reviews with its female empowerment message as well as its nearly 2 hours of non-stop adrenaline rush – not to mention, the show-stealing metal guitarist-cum-flamethrower. Last week's champion "Avengers: Age of Ultron" may have slipped to third place this week, collecting only USD38.8 million, but it has reached yet another impressive milestone as it raced past the USD1 billion mark in just 24 days, after its USD156.3 million debut in the Chinese market.
