Cathay Malaysia rebranded as mmCineplexes

Cathay Cineplex Damansara is now mmCineplexes Damansara PJ.

23 May – Effective from 21 May 2016, Cathay cinemas in Malaysia have been rebranded as mmCineplexes, following the acquisition by mm2 Asia.

Cathay Cineplex Damansara, the cinema located at e@Curve in Petaling Jaya, Selangor is now known as mmCineplexes Damansara PJ.

Meanwhile the cinema located at Johor Bahru City Square, Johor, previously known as Cathay Cineplex City Square, is now rebranded as mmCineplexes City Square JB.

"As for now, we are not adding any more halls [to the current cinemas]," said mm2 Screen Management Sdn Bhd Marketing Executive Ms Nafisya when contacted by Cinema Online.

When asked whether there will be plans to open new cinemas, Ms Nafisya replied, "Yes we have plans but there is no official date yet."

mmCineplexes is currently headed by Chief Operating Officer (COO) Angelin Ong.

In an introduction of a new cinema team last October, it was revealed that Ong was also appointed COO of mm2 Screen, where she will be responsible for the overall operations of mm2 Screen.

Last year, mm2 Asia's wholly-owned Malaysian subsidiary, mm2 Screen Management Sdn Bhd, entered into a sale and purchase agreement (SPA) with Cathay Cineplexes Sdn Bhd, acquiring its two business operations in Malaysia for a total of RM40 million.

The official launching ceremony for the rebranding is expected to take place at mmCineplexes Damansara PJ this coming July.
