8 Nov – You've seen it in its original Korean form, followed by its Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese remakes, soon you'll be able to catch the popular South Korean comedy movie, "Miss Granny", in English. "We could not find a partner more suitable for the English-language remake of 'Granny,' than Tyler Perry Studio," said Korean media company CJ E&M in a statement, as quoted by Deadline. Tyler Perry - actor, comedian, director, producer, among others - is best known for his "Madea" movie series. Perry will be producing the African-American version of "Miss Granny" but looks like he won't be doing any body-switching this time as he will not be part of the cast. There is currently no word on who will be directing and acting in the remake. The English-language "Miss Granny" remake is expected to open in cinemas in 2018.
Aside from the English version, there will also be a Spanish version, to be produced via Eugenio Derbez's 3pas Studios, also set to be released in North America the same year as Perry's remake. The original South Korean version, directed by Hwang Dong-Hyuk ("Silenced", "My Father") was released on 22 January 2014. Based on Box Office Mojo stats, the movie - about a 74-year-old widow, Oh Mal-soon (Na Moon-hee), who turned back into a 20-year-old woman after taking a self-portrait at a mysterious photo studio – made USD58.2 million in its home country. "20, Once Again!", the Leste Chen-directed Chinese remake of the movie, was released in January last year and became the all-time biggest Korea-China joint production with its USD57.4 million gross. The success prompted remakes in Vietnamese, released last year, and Japanese, released this year. It also spawned various other different languages remakes, including Thai, Indonesian, Indian and German versions, the latter two have yet to receive release dates while Indonesia's "Sweet 20" and Thailand's "Suddenly 20" will be released in 2017.
