8 May – Taking place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California, the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards was a night that celebrated many firsts in MTV Award history. New categories were added to the list of awards to accommodate talent in both television and cinema as well as gender neutrality. Not only were the best actor and actress categories combined into one new category, other categories showcased this year included best host, best reality competition, tearjerker, next generation, trending and more. This year's host, actor, comedian and singer Adam Devine kicked off the opening by performing a parody of "Beauty And The Beast" that included cameos from stars such as Josh Gad, Hugh Jackman, Blake Anderson as well as Devine's fellow "Pitch Perfect" alumni Rebel Wilson and Hailee Steinfeld,
"Billions" and "Orange Is The New Black" star Asia Kate Dillon presented the first award of the night to Emma Watson for the first-ever non-gendered Best Actor in a Movie category. The stars of the "Fast And Furious" franchise Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Jordana Brewster later came on stage to accept the Generation Award which, in previous years, was given to individual actors, but this is the very first time a film franchise won the honour. Diesel then gave homage to his friend and fellow "Fast And Furious" co-star, the late Paul Walker, by reminiscing of the first time he accepted an award for the "Fast And Furious" franchise fifteen years ago, when MTV awarded him and Walker for Best Duo. The night continues with the first-ever Best Fight the System award going to "Hidden Figures" and the first-ever Best American Story Award going to "Blackish". Young actress Millie Bobby Brown was later crowned the first-ever Best Actor in a Show award for her role in the Netflix original, "Stranger Things". Other newly added categories include Tearjerker, which was awarded to a scene in "This Is Us"; Best Host, which was awarded to Trevor Noah from "The Daily Show"; as well as Best Reality Competition won by "RuPaul's Drag Race" and Next Generation won by "Get Out" star Daniel Kaluuya.
The evening also included performances from Big Sean, Noah Cyrus as well as J Balvin, Pitbull and Camila Cabello, who performed "Hey Ma", the song featured in "Fast And Furious 8". There were also screenings of exclusive sneak peeks of the year's most anticipates films: "It", "Transformers: The Last Knight", "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and "Wonder Woman".
