8 Aug – Seven critically-acclaimed films from ASEAN, including the award winning "Jagat" by Shanjhey Kumar Perumal, have been selected for screening at the upcoming SAC ASEAN Film Festival 2017. All seven films from countries such as Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Myanmar, Cambodia, and the Philippines will be showcased over five days beginning this 19 August, as revealed by FINAS on its official Facebook. Malaysia's representative film, "Jagat", tells of a 12-year-old mischievous boy, Appoy, whose father becomes more and more abusive as the boy is inexorably drawn to the criminal lifestyle of his uncles, former drug-addict Bala and local gangster Dorai. The film has previously won the Best Malaysia Film and Best New Director awards at last year's Malaysia Film Festival (FFM). SAC ASEAN Film Festival will open with the premiere of "Forever Yours", a Vietnamese romantic film centering on the love triangle between three men; followed by the heartwarming film "Long Long Time Ago" set in a typical Chinese family during the pre-independence era of Singapore. Other films slated for screening are "Ziarah: Tales of the Otherworlds" an Indonesian movie about the journey of an elderly woman in search of her husband's tomb; the celebrated Philippines' film "Ma Rosa" exploring the drug abuse and poverty situation in Manila; and "Dream Land", a Cambodian film centering on the life of an ambitious young real estate agent. Myanmar's "The Road to Mandalay", which sees the flight of two illegal Burmese migrants to Thailand during their country's civil war, will close the festival. The film festival will take place at the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre from 19 to 23 August 2017.
