3 Aug – Netflix has finally dropped the first trailer for the Angelina Jolie-directed Cambodian drama, "First They Killed My Father". Adapted from Loung Ung's memoir of the same name, the Khmer-language movie follows Ung's harrowing childhood experience during the Khmer Rouge regime in the late 1970s. The trailer which has little to no words, features child actress Sareum Srey Moch as young Ung, who has had her normal life turned upside down when Khmer Rouge soldiers attack her native city in 1975. When her hometown capital of Phnom Penh is overtaken by Pol Pot's army, Ung gets separated from her family and is forced to become a child soldier while her siblings were sent to labour camps. The movie also covers the Cambodian genocide which killed one-quarter of the country's population. Ung who is a Cambodian human rights activist and a friend of Jolie, shares a writing credit on the film, which is produced by local documentary filmmaker Rithy Panh.
"First They Killed My Father" is slated for a world premiere at this year's Toronto International Film Festival on 15 September 2017 and will also be released on Netflix on the same day. The film held its Cambodian premiere in Siam Reap on 18 February 2017 at Angkor Thom.
