17 Feb – The residents of Kuala Terengganu have been deprived of cinematic entertainment for around two decades, and finally, their long-time wish for a cinema to open in the city is finally being fulfilled come early March.
The new cinema will be located at Paya Bunga Sentral and operated by Lotus Five Star (LFS) Cinemas. With 11 halls spread over several levels of the mall, the cinema has a seating capacity of almost 1,700 and will feature a surau on every level.
Six of the halls are expected to open on 6 March 2017 while the remaining five will open sometime in the following month.
The cinema was previously expected to open by mid-2016. However, the Paya Bunga commercial complex, where Paya Bunga Sentral is located alongside Paya Bunga Square and Paya Bunga Plaza, was only recently completed in time for Visit Terengganu Year 2017.
Kuala Terengganu residents, who had even created a Facebook page in their plea for a cinema, would be happy to know that the modern cinema is equipped with Dolby Atmos sound system and will be showing English, Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese and Indian movies.
While there will be no seats segregations for males and females at the cinema, several operating conditions will be imposed which include no midnight shows, closure for 'Malam Jumaat' (starting 6pm Thursday until 3pm the next day), closure during Ramadan (6pm to 8pm daily), closure from 6pm during eve of Maulidur Rasul and Israk Mikraj until 6pm the next day, and closure from 6pm on the eve of Hari Raya Haji and Hari Raya Aidilfitri until 2pm the next day.
Apart from confirmation of the cinemas' opening, LFS Cinemas couldn't be contacted for further comments at the time of writing.
The state of Terengganu currently houses only one other cinema, which started operation since 2005. Located in the Kemaman district, TGV Cinemas Mesra Mall is a 5-hall cinema with a seating capacity of 782.
