"X-Men" may be getting a horror trilogy spinoff

"The New Mutants" will branch out of the "X-Men" norm and dive into the horror genre.

19 Oct – After the success of "Deadpool" and "Logan", which branch out of its main franchise's sci-fi genre, it seems that Fox is now instilling in its new "X-Men" spinoff this year's much loved genre – horror.

Not only are we getting a horror spinoff, but director Josh Boone has even revealed plans of the upcoming "The New Mutants" being the first of a horror trilogy, according to IGN.

"We brought it to FOX as a trilogy of films, really all based on that long run by Sienkiewicz, and kind of incorporates some stuff from later issues in the '80s.

"There are all going to be horror movies, and they're all be their own distinct kind of horror movies. This is certainly the 'rubber-reality' supernatural horror movie. The next one will be a completely different kind of horror movie," Boone said.

"The Fault in Our Stars" helmer also revealed that the upcoming spinoff is inspired by the "Demon Bear" arc in the comics, while also drawing from movies such as "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", "Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors", and some Stephen King adaptations.

Boone pays homage to director Wes Craven with this figure-stretching-through-the-walls scene,
which is featured in 1984's "A Nightmare on Elm Street".

"We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the "X-Men" universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We're trying to do something very, very different," Boone previously said to Entertainment Weekly regarding the spinoff development.

In the comics, the New Mutants are a group of children who arrived at the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters to learn ways to control their flourishing supernatural powers and discuss the finer merits of becoming super-powered child soldiers.

While "The New Mutants" will introduce many of the same characters as in the comics, a striking difference in the movie's setting can be seen through the newly-released trailer, with the children now being trapped in an asylum-hospital hybrid facility rather than the comic's upstate New York school.

Starring "Game of Thrones'" Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, "Split's" Anya Taylor-Joy as Majik, "Stranger Things'" Charlie Heaton as Cannonball and "13 Reasons Why's" Henry Zaga as Sunspot, "The New Mutants" will open in North America on13 April 2018.
