8 Nov – Returning for its 17th edition in Malaysia this year is the Latin American Film Festival (LAFF), which successfully held its opening ceremony at GSC Pavilion KL yesterday evening. "The 2018 Latin American Film Festival marks the last film festival that we will be launching this year," said GSC CEO Ms. Koh Mei Lee in her welcome speech. Stating that GSC has been the partner and venue provider for a total of 9 film festivals this year, setting a record since GSC started working on film festivals under the umbrella of GSC International Screens, Ms. Koh added, "This goes to show that the Malaysian audience is really hungry to learn and experience the cultures from around the world and movies are one of the best platforms to showcase the beauty and diversity of the various cultures."
H.E. Carlos Martins Ceglia, the Brazilian Ambassador to Malaysia, echoed the same thoughts on film festivals being a great vessel for cultural education in his opening speech. "VIPs", a movie from Brazil, was the opening film for LAFF 2018. It tells of a criminal, infamous for impersonating several prominent people, who one day makes the mistake of doing a TV interview as one of the men he is impersonating.
This year's LAFF showcases Latin American and Caribbean movies plus one title, "The Making of the Mahatma", from guest country India. Other movies showing at LAFF 2018 are "Wild Tales", "Rock, Paper, Scissors", "Mateo", "Habanastation", "The Dinosaurs Extinction", "An Intimate Distance: The Law Of The Swindler", "The Selkirk Real Robinson Crusoe", and "Mariposa Negra". All the movies are screening for free at GSC Pavilion KL from today until 11 November 2018. Get more info and showtimes for the Latin American Film Festival 2018 right HERE.
