23 Jan – "Black Panther" has made superhero movie history at the Oscars. The Ryan Coogler-directed movie's nomination for Best Picture marks the first time that a superhero movie is included in the category. Previously, the Academy was going to introduce a Popular Movie category, which was ridiculed by fans and critics alike as it was seen as a way to include "Black Panther" in the awards without actually putting it in the Best Picture category. Looks like the Academy has in the end decided to just give "Black Panther" its much-deserved Best Picture nomination, even if it is a superhero movie which doesn't usually qualify as Best Picture-worthy by their standards. The movie received six other nominations overall, though unfortunately none for Coogler. The six other nominations are Best Original Song, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Original Score, Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. No other superhero movie has reached such heights. Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" (2008) was considered a superhero blockbuster and thought to have a high chance of securing The Best Picture nomination but ultimately failed to receive it.
