"Venom" sets writer for confirmed sequel

Tom Hardy will return to portray Venom in the sequel.

8 Jan – The last we heard of a potential sequel for "Venom" was in late November, when Sony Pictures revealed there will be two Marvel movies in 2020 and it was speculated that one of them will be "Venom 2".

While the October 2020 release date remains a speculation, now it is at least confirmed that a sequel is in the works, as Variety reported that a writer has been tapped to pen the script.

Kelly Marcel, who wrote and produced the first movie, will be back as a writer as well as an executive producer for the sequel.

Tom Hardy will be reprising his titular role, with Michelle Williams expected to return as Anne Weying. Woody Harrelson, who appeared in the first movie's mid-credits scene as Cletus Kasady a.k.a. Carnage, is set to join the sequel as well.

Reuben Fleischer might not be returning to the director's chair since he will be busy helming the sequel to 2009 comedy, "Zombieland".

A follow-up to last year's "Venom" has been highly expected since the movie managed to become the seventh highest-grossing movie of 2018 following its October release, making USD855.6 million worldwide on its estimated USD100 million budget.
