6 Jan – Although failing to win Best Director at the 77th Golden Globe Awards, Quentin Tarantino still emerged the big winner with his "Once Upon A Time in Hollywood", which took home three awards. The movie won Best Motion Picture in Musical or Comedy and Best Screenplay, as well as Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt. Meanwhile, the epic war film "1917" was named Best Motion Picture in Drama. The movie, directed by Sam Mendes and starring George Mackay, Dean-Charles Chapman, and Mark String, bested other contenders including "The Irishman" and "Joker" to win the said title. Mendes also won Best Director, defeating nominees that include Bong Joon-ho ("Parasite") and Tarantino.
Meanwhile, Awkwafina made history as the first Asian-American actress to win in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category. She earned the accolade through her role as Billi Wang in "The Farewell". On the small screen side, following its success at the Primetime Emmy Awards in September, the British comedy "Fleabag" was also named Best Television Comedy at the Golden Globes. The show, which was created by and stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the titular character, also won the said actress a Best Actress accolade in the TV Series - Comedy category, besting other contenders including fan favourite Natasha Lyonne ("Russian Doll") and previous winner Rachel Brosnahan ("The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel").
