Blockbusters coming our way

Writer: Michelle Tan

10 Jun - With the closure of Malaysian cinemas due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are sadly missing out on the much anticipated big-budget movies that are set to be released this summer in the US, aptly called the summer blockbuster movie season.

Many movies have had their release dates delayed since last year. Though the cinemas in the US have reopened with social distancing measures in place, some studios are adopting a wait and see measure before deciding on whether to release their movies exclusively in cinemas, or follow the likes of "Mulan" and "Raya and the Last Dragon" and be a Premier Access title in Disney+.

Even big-budgeted movies such as "The Extraction" and "Army of the Dead" were released exclusively on Netflix and have proven to be big hits, with some planning a hybrid release on both the big screens and on streaming platforms.

As more and more Malaysians are getting vaccinated and receiving protection, we hope that life will slowly gain normalcy. In the meantime, let's check out the upcoming movies for some cheer and anticipation.

Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga

The first "Fast and the Furious" film was released in 2001, and 20 years later, the 9th instalment is finally here. Vin Diesel had recently revealed that the upcoming "F9" will feature the origin story of his character, Dominic Toretto. The team will be back, this time with John Cena as Dom's brother, Jakob.

The highly anticipated release is set for June 25 in the US, three days after the 20-year anniversary of the original film.

Black Widow

The release date for "Black Widow" has been changed three times and looks like the fourth time may just be the charm, it being 9 July. The upcoming Scarlett Johansson-starrer will be released simultaneously in the theatres as well as on Disney+ Premier Access.

This time, Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow confronts the darker parts of her past and reunites with her family when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

This live-action/animated sequel to 1996`s "Space Jam" stars professional basketball player LeBron James as himself. Also part of the cast are Don Cheadle, Zendaya (voicing Lola Bunny) and Sonequa Martin-Green.

The movie features popular Looney Tunes characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Lola Bunny and Marvin the Martian. The movie is scheduled for release on 16 July.

Jungle Cruise

Starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, "Jungle Cruise" is inspired by the famous Disneyland theme park ride. It is believed that deep in the jungle, there exists a tree that is touted to have healing powers. The Rock plays a riverboat captain who takes Emily Blunt's scientist character and her brother on a mission into the jungle to look for this mystical tree.

Fans will anticipate lots of fun thrills and spills for this one as is to be expected of The Rock's movies. It is scheduled to be released in the US cinemas on July 30 as well as on Disney+ on the same day.

Raging Fire

Not an American movie but it is a Donnie Yen & Nicholas Tse-starrer, so that means that this action film directed by the late Benny Chan is a guaranteed blockbuster hit. It is scheduled for release this 30 July.

The plot revolves around Inspector Shan from the serious crimes unit who is forced to take on his former protégé who has gone rogue. As the fate of the two men becomes entangled, it is now the time to settle all old scores.

The Suicide Squad 2

Slated for release in Malaysia on 5 August, we hope that the cinemas will reopen by then so we can watch the adventures of this dysfunctional group. Directed by James Gunn who also directed "Guardians of the Galaxy", it is going to be a super fun ride.

Margot Robbie is back as Harley Quinn, with Idris Elba joining the team as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker and (check this out!), Sylvester Stallone providing the voice for King Shark. Warner Bros has announced that the movie will be released simultaneously in the US and on HBO Max on 6 August.

Air Force The Movie: Selagi Bernyawa

With an apt release date of 26 August just prior to our Hari Merdeka, "Air Force The Movie: Selagi Bernyawa' is directed by Zulkarnain Azhar and Frank See. Starring Aiman Hakim, Adi Putra, Nas-T, Pablo Amirul, Luqman Hafidz, Johan As'ari and Jack Tan, this is a cinematic tribute to our country's fighter pilots.

The film follows the story of a PASKAU team led by Captain Adib and his mentor, Major Adnan, who are tasked with protecting humanitarians serving in war torn country. The team's plane was shot down on their return home and it is now up to the Malaysian Air Force to bring the men safely home.

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings

Marvel Studios' first Asian superhero movie, "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" is highly anticipated for its many action scenes that one would expect from such martial arts-packed movie. Lead actor Simu Liu plays the titular character and fans of Hong Kong superstar Tony Leung would also be elated to see the award-winning star as the antagonist Wenwu.

Other actors include Awkwafina, who plays the best friend Katy, former TVB actress Fala Chen as Jiang Li, and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan. The movie is set to be released on 2 September 2021 in the theatres.
