24 Jun – Following "Cinderella", "Beauty and the Beast", and "The Little Mermaid" (the latter currently in the works), it is now Snow White's turn to be the next Disney Princess to be turned into a live-action film. Disney will be helming an adaptation of its first ever animated feature film, with "West Side Story" actress Rachel Zegler to play the titular character. It is noted that "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was the first ever animated feature film released by Disney in 1937, becoming a massive success for the studio – and enabled it to embark on many subsequent fairy tales re-telling. Being half Polish and half Columbian, Zegler's casting is seen as a move by Disney to move away from its conventional fair-skinned princesses, despite the Evil Queen asking "'Mirror mirror on the wall, who's the fairest one of all?" "Rachel's extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts," said Webb. "Her strength, intelligence and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale."
The project will be helmed by Marc Webb and produced by Marc Platt. Aside from Webb, Disney reportedly has also called upon Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the Oscar and Tony-winning duo behind "La La Land", "The Greatest Showman" and "Dear Evan Hansen", to write new songs for the movie. Production is expected to start in 2022.
