The "Divergent" movie series was supposed to be a four-part movie franchise.

11 Apr - If there are still fans of the "Divergent" series out there who are still holding out hopes that the fourth movie will materialise, we have bad news.

Even the producer is saying no to it.

Neil Burger, who directed the first movie and produced the last two titles, shared his thoughts about the fourth and final instalment of the YA franchise, saying that while a continuation could be possible, he doesn't think it's going to happen.

"And it's a shame, in a way, because there were three books, and it should have been three (movies). Lionsgate is distributing "Voyagers", and I love the people at Lionsgate... But at the time, actually I think I said to them, 'It should just be three [movies]'."

While he did produce the third movie, Burger said that he wasn't really involved in it.

"It just didn't go well, and then it got left hanging with part of it," he added.

It is noted that in the mid 2010s, Lionsgate had fallen to the trap of splitting the third and last book into two movies, just like other famous YA franchises like "Harry Potter", "Twilight", and "The Hunger Games" - a strategy that bode ill with audiences and critics alike. The third film, "Allegiant", which was released in 2016, was highly criticised for the lack of originality and character development.

Due to the poor performance of the third film, Lionsgate decided to cancel the planned fourth movie altogether and planned for a TV series instead, only for it to be scrapped due to the lack of interest from network executives and cast members themselves who had since moved on to other projects.

"It didn't need to be, and it shouldn't have been," said Burger about the split.

Shailene Woodley stars as the titular protagonist, Tris, in the movies.

The "Divergent" series ("Divergent", "Insurgent", and "Allegiant") is based on the Young Adult novels of the same name by the American author Veronica Roth. It stars Shailene Woodley as Tris, a 16 year-old living in a dystopian Chicago discovering that she does not fit only one mould of the five factions of the society at the time and could be a threat to the existing social order due to her being a Divergent.
