It's about time that the unsung heroes that make the actors look so cool are recognised

15 Jul – The 2021 Emmys recently surprised many by adding a whole new category to its awards this year, and it is for the group of film workers usually ignored by awards organisers.

The award, known as Excellent Stunt Efficiency, is designed to recognise an individual or team of stunt performers, distinguishing it from the stunt coordination categories.

This year's nominees are Jahnel Curfman, Julia Maggio, John Cihangir, and Marc Canonizado for their work on Netflix's "Cobra Kai"; Mens-Sana Tamakloe (AMC+'s "Gangs of London"); Janeshia Adams-Ginyard (HBO's "Lovecraft Country"); John Nania, Aaron Toney, and Justin Eaton for Disney+'s "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier"; and Lateef Crowder for his work on Disney+'s "The Mandalorian".

Among the nominees, only Curfman has been nominated in Emmy's Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Comedy Series or a Variety Program in 2019 for her work in "Cobra Kai".

It is noted that there has been a call for a long time for major TV and film awards to include and honour stunt performers. While stunt coordination has been honoured by the Television Academy, the performers themselves have never received the proper recognition.

Back in late 2020, the organisation stated, "This new award will recognise stunt performers themselves; previously, there have only been stunt coordination categories. The award will acknowledge actual stunt artists whose performances across the global television medium are integral to storytelling each season. Team entries will be capped at four entrants."

The 73rd Emmy Awards will be held on 19 September.
