27 Dec – "Avatar: The Way of Water" continues to soar at the box office, despite the many obstacles it had to face following its release. The movie, which made USD 435 million on its opening weekend, has now crossed USD 855 million after a week of showing, with USD 56 million domestically and USD 601 million internationally. This makes it the fifth highest grossing movie of 2022 after just ten days in theatres. Variety reported that by the end of the year, the film may hit the USD 1 billion mark, joining the likes of "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Jurassic World: Dominion". It is speculated that the film could have made even more in its second weekend if not for the fact that extreme weather conditions in the US have resulted in poor turnout at the movies. The film also didn't do as well as expected in China due to theatre closures caused by a new wave of COVID cases in the country. It is noted that the first "Avatar" still holds the record for the highest grossing film of all time with USD 2.9 billion. In a previous interview, director James Cameron admitted that the sequel needs to be the third or fourth highest grossing movie of all time to break even due to its hefty budget.
