1 Jan - Veteran comedienne and actress Betty White has passed away.

Her agent and close friend Jeff Witjas released a statement that read, "Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever. I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much.

"I don't think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again," he added. Ludden passed away in 1981 after 18 years of marriage with White. She never remarried.

The actress, who was known for her many TV shows and movies such as "The Golden Girls" and "Hot in Cleveland", was just weeks away from celebrating her 100th birthday.

Fellow celebrities took to social media to mourn the loss, including White's "The Proposal" co-stars, Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.

Said Bullock, "I don't drink vodka... but I will tonight, on ice, with a slice of lemon and a hot dog on the other side, and just be okay being sad."

Saying that White has amazing comedic talent, Bullock continued, "Timing isn't easy in comedy, because you have to navigate other people's timing. Betty pivots like I have never seen, making it look seamless."

Ryan Reynolds also posted a tribute for the actress, writing, "The world looks different now. She was great at defying expectation. She managed to grow very old and somehow, not old enough. We'll miss you, Betty."

She was weeks shy of her 100th birthday

On the other hand, the US Army also tweeted a tribute to White, who served during WWII.

"We are saddened by the passing of Betty White. Not only was she an amazing actress, she also served during WWII as a member of the American Women's Voluntary Services. A true legend on and off the screen."

She was 99.
