10 Jan – After previously succeeding in getting "Black Panther" several Oscar nominations, Disney and Marvel are now working hard to get its recent superhero films into the prestigious awards again. The House of Mouse is reportedly trying to get a Best Picture win yet again for the 2022 Academy Awards by pushing several of its titles for its "For Your Consideration" ads, including "Black Widow" and "Shang Chi". However, it was Chloe Zhao's "Eternals" which is being pushed the hardest not only for Best Picture, but also Best Director for Zhao, Best Actress for Gemma Chan, Best Actor for Richard Madden, Best Supporting Actress for Angelina Jolie, and Best Original Score for Ramin Djawadi among others.
It is noted that Zhao is no stranger to the Academy Awards. She is the second woman filmmaker to have won Best Director for "Nomadland" in the history of the Academy Awards at its event last year. At the same time, Marvel will also be competing against themselves, as Sony is also launching a campaign for "Spider-Man: No Way Home" for similar categories, a decision that was made after the film's massive box office success and the call for superhero movies to be considered for such big awards. It is noted that Marvel and Sony previously won Best Animated Feature for "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse". Meanwhile, "Black Panther", which did make it to the Best Picture nomination (becoming the first superhero movie to do so), lost to "Green Book" in the same year, but won Best Original Score, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design.
