Fahmi Fadzil wants Malaysian movies to expand to Southeast Asia

10 May - Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil would like to see more Malaysian movies to go further than the local market and to expand to Southeast Asia as a whole.

The minister, who spoke to the media recently at the special screening of Syafiq Yusof's "Sheriff: Narko Integriti", stated that the Southeast Asian film industry has a big potential, seeing the mass number of population in the region.

"Wouldn't it be great if a Malaysian movie can be screened throughout the region? Malaysia has 33 million people, and from there, 10 to 12 million people are cinemagoers. Imagine if we take our movies to 600 million people? I think it's a huge market," he said.

Thus, he said, in order to realise that dream, the government will reexamine the Digital Content Fund that has been established to help develop the country's film industry.

Fahmi also said the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) had been instructed to hold a meeting with its strategic partners in the region.

He said this includes meeting with film distributors and inviting speakers so that the government's efforts towards ASEAN Cinema are achieved.

"My hope is that before the end of the year we can meet up before Malaysia becomes the Chair of ASEAN. We will highlight the positive and good things from the discussion in the context of ASEAN," he said.
