26 Nov - As "Wicked" finally makes its premiere after years in production, director Jon M Chu was asked the most important question of all, and it involves his previous hit movie, "Crazy Rich Asians". The filmmaker, whose 2018 movie made USD 239 million at the box office and broke various records including becoming the biggest all-Asian cast film, first announced the sequel following its successful opening. However, the project seemed to remain in development since then, with the latest news being 2022, though it was to announce a spinoff project centering on Gemma Chan's character Astrid Young.
Speaking about the sequel recently, Chu stated that he will not bring everybody back unless it is worth it. "There's too much on the line for everybody. I want the best thing. I want it to be worthy of what Crazy Rich Asians 1 was. We've tried all different versions. It's hard because people think the first movie is like the book, but it actually is not. It's the right spirit, but the plotting is very different. And so, you can't just go and translate. And we've tried versions and the fact is, is that we just haven't gotten there," he said. Chu said that the first movie has set the bar too high that they will get there when they get there. "To me, that sequel right now is that the Broadway musical that we're working on. That's very exciting and very fun," he added. It is noted that the last time there was an update on the project, it was that Amy Wang was writing the draft and that the story will combine both the second and third book from Kevin Kwan's series, titled "China Rich Girlfriend" and "Rich People Problems".
