6 May - Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh recently became the first Asian actress to be honoured with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The actress accepted the medal, which is the highest honour of the United States from the President himself, Joe Biden, in a formal ceremony held at the White House.

In his speech, Biden stated, "Yeoh's role transcends gender, culture, and language. From martial arts to romantic comedies, science fiction, it all shows the commonality we all share."

"As the first Asian to win an Oscar, Yeoh connects cultures not only to entertain but also to inspire and enlighten many to this day... Congratulations," he added.

The 61-year-old "Everything Everywhere All At Once" star was chosen for the honour after winning Best Actress last year for the aforementioned movie, making her the first ever Asian actress to have been awarded the coveted trophy.

Among other previous recipients include Olympic medalist, Simone Biles, singer Elvis Presley, politician John F. Kennedy, and baseball player Babe Ruth.
