2 May - Despite its title, the new Malaysian movie "Oppa" is not your typical love story between a Korean man and a Malaysian woman, but a film about the infamous love scams that have been plaguing the country.

Malaysian director Denil Choong, who spoke about the movie recently, shared that the movie is based on a true story that was derived from the cases filed at the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).

"Our objective is to raise awareness [of these scams] as even the highly educated were victimised by such deceptions. We hope to relay this message more clearly through the platform of films," he said.

As to why the title of "Oppa", Denil said that it came from the fact that some of these con artistes would use photos of good looking South Korean men to deceive their victims via dating apps.

In the movie, which stars Korean actor Theo Jang and influencer Jacqueline Goh, a school teacher loses thousands of Ringgit after her supposed South Korean boyfriend disappeared on her. To make matters worse, Ah Long money lenders start to go after her.

The movie, which will be in theatres on 9 May, also co-stars Lee Ziqi, Amanda Tan, Sadiq M Jamil, and Chen Kuoyang. It also receives cooperation from PDRM through its Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK).
