Sarawak film, "Tegkang" wins at First-Time Filmmaker Showcase

"Tegkang" is a film about the Kelabit community life in the Bario highlands, Sarawak
26 Sep - Malaysia's "Tegkang" was revealed to have won Best New Filmmaker Award at the First-Time Filmmaker Showcase.

The movie, which portrays the lives of those living in the highlands of Bario, Sarawak, is now qualified to compete in the final round of the annual Season Awards, held at the Pinewood Studios, London.

Written and directed by Josh Nawan, "Tegkang", which is Kelabit for "Rainbow", tells the story of how the life in a remote village that has been kept a secret for many years begins to unravel with the presence of a visitor who forms a friendship with a local girl.

The film also showcases the uniqueness of Bario not only as an attractive scenic location, but as a place rich in cultural experiences including traditional festivals and hereditary ceremonies rarely seen by the outside world.

Said Josh Nawan, "The Kelabit community, which is the indigenous Dayak people from the highlands of Sarawak, is rarely represented in the art world, so this recognition means a lot to us. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to share a story so deeply rooted in heritage and thankful that this film will now reach even more audiences."

Lift-Off First-Time Filmmaker Sessions is a monthly online showcase dedicated to supporting the work of new directors. It also serves as a stepping stone for filmmakers to gain recognition from new audiences and industry professionals.
