2 Oct - China has finally selected its representative on the race for the Academy Awards' Best International Feature Film.

The movie, "The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru", is a World War II documentary by director Fang Li that chronicles an obscure event in 1942 whereupon an unmarked Japanese troop transport ship, The Lisbon Maru, which transported more than 1,800 British prisoners of war (POWs) from Hong Kong to Japan - was torpedoed by a U.S. submarine.

Nearly 380 British POW were then saved by the heroic efforts of nearby Chinese fishermen who then sheltered these prisoners from Japanese forces.

The film, which was released on 6 September, opened the Shanghai International Film Festival back in June. It received 9.3 ratings on Douban, with many commending the story about these ordinary Chinese heroes.

Last year, China submitted Frant Gwo's sci-fi, "The Wandering Earth 2". The country has never won an Oscar in the said category.

Earlier, Hong Kong submitted the action flick, "Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In", while Taiwan sent Hsiao Ya-chuan's "Old Fox".
