Indonesia submits "Women from Rote Island" to the Oscars


"Women from Rote Island" reveals the widespread problem of sexual discrimination in a highly patriarchal community
2 Oct - Indonesia has picked "Women from Rote Island" as its official submission for the Academy Awards' Best International Feature Film category.

The movie, titled "Perempuan Berkelamin Darah" is the directorial debut of Jeremias Nyangoen, who hailed from Pontianak, West Kalimantan and was known for his character Sumanto in the 2004 movie, "Kanibal-Sumanto".

The news was announced by the Oscar Selection Committee of Indonesia, headed by Deddy Mizwar, after the film competed with 16 other titles aiming to represent the country.

"Women from Rote Island" tells the story of a woman who faces discrimination and sexual violence abroad while working as an illegal migrant worker and has to deal with the trauma as she returns to her island to attend her father's funeral.

The movie stars Irma Rihi in the lead, alongside Linda Adoe, Sallum Ratu, and Van Jhoov.

It had its world premiere at the 28th Busan International Film Festival on 7 October 2023 and won four accolades at the Indonesian Film Festival 2023 including Best Film and Best Director.

Last year, Indonesia submitted the Makbul Mubarak movie, "Autobiography".
