31 Dec – Idris Elba has recently been named one of the recipients of the Knight of the Realm by the UK government. The actor, who already has an OBE, was revealed to have been made "Sir" not for his acting achievements but for his "services to Young People", namely his charity work for youths at the Elba Hope Foundation.
The foundation supports community empowerment, education, youth advocacy and sustainable development. "This year's honours list celebrates the very best of Britain – people who put the common good ahead of themselves to strengthen communities and change lives," said Prime Minister Starmer. "Their quiet dedication speaks to the decent, compassionate country we are proud to be. On behalf of the whole nation, thank you – and congratulations to everyone recognised today." Aside from Elba, "Wicked" star Cynthia Erivo has also been honoured with Member of the Order of the British Empire. Said Erivo, "To be given this recognition to celebrate the work that I love to do within the arts, specifically music and drama, is an honour I could never have thought would happen."
