5 Nov - Indian animation is gearing up for something pretty special. "Baahubali: The Eternal War," a two-part animated feature, is heading to theatres in 2027, and it's bringing the epic world of Mahishmati back to the big screen in a whole new way.

The project comes from the team behind SS Rajamouli's blockbuster franchise. Rajamouli, who also helmed the award-winning "RRR," is producing this animated expansion that picks up right where fans were left hanging after "Baahubali: The Beginning." This time, Prince Amarendra Baahubali (once again voiced by Prabhas) finds himself navigating the afterlife and caught up in an age-old clash between divine forces.

It's a cosmic battle between devas and asuras, which should give the story plenty of room for the kind of grand-scale action the franchise is known for. Ramya Krishna returns as well, reprising her role as the formidable Sivagami. The music is once again composed by M.M. Keeravaani.

Behind the scenes, director Ishan Shukla (known for his work on "Star Wars: Visions") is teaming up with writer Scott Mosier, who previously directed "The Grinch." The production itself is quite the international affair, with animation studios from India, the UK, Scotland, and France all collaborating under the banner of India's Arka Mediaworks. The goal is to blend international expertise with the local Indian talent to create a distinct visual style that does justice to the franchise's grand storytelling. The team is aiming for stylised visuals and action sequences that match the emotional intensity and spectacle that made the original films such a phenomenon.

When early footage was shown during last week's theatrical re-release of "Baahubali: The Epic" (a combined cut of the original two films), the online response was enthusiastic. Indian fans were clearly impressed by the animation quality on display, and the buzz suggests this could set a new standard for what Indian animation can achieve.

Rajamouli expressed his excitement about the project, saying the idea of expanding the Baahubali universe into a stylised animated epic "clicked instantly" when Shukla brought it to him. He noted it feels like a natural extension of the world they create - one that should thrill existing fans while drawing in new audiences as well.
