29 Dec - French actress Brigitte Bardot has recently passed away.

The news was confirmed by the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, adding that the actress chose to abandon her prestigious career "to dedicate her life and energy to animal welfare and her foundation".

However, they did not give details about when or where she died.

Making her debut in the early 1950s, Bardot rose to international fame in 1956 with "And God Created Woman". She went on to appear in multiple films including "Le Mepris," "Viva Maria!"

Bardot, who earned the nickname "sex kitten," retired in 1973, and became an animal rights activist.

However, she became much more controversial in her later years for her far-right politics and racist remarks, and was fined six times for inciting racial hatred.

Bardot was also criticised for dismissing sexual harassment issues in the film industry, saying, "Many actresses flirt with producers to get a role. Then when they tell the story afterwards, they say they have been harassed. ... In actual fact, rather than benefit them, it only harms them."
