13 Nov - The Guangdong in Frames, Souls in Resonance - Chinese Film Week officially opened this evening at GSC MyTOWN, Kuala Lumpur, marking the Malaysian stop of its Southeast Asian tour. The programme showcases five outstanding Guangdong-produced films that highlight the region's creative vitality and artistic vision in contemporary Chinese cinema.

The opening ceremony was attended by representatives from the Guangdong Film & Television Service Platform, the Guangzhou Film Association, and Beyond Frozen Films, alongside the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), as well as Malaysia's official partner Blackflag Sdn. Bhd. and the Official Cinema Partner, GSC International Screens. The event also welcomed members of Malaysia's film community and cultural institutions, who gathered to support and celebrate the deepening cinematic exchange between Guangdong and Southeast Asia.

Delivering the keynote address, Zhao Meng Fei, Director of the Guangdong Film & Television Service Platform and President & Secretary-General of the Guangzhou Film Association, expressed heartfelt appreciation for Malaysia's warm reception: "Film is a universal language that transcends borders and connects hearts. China and Malaysia share deep cultural roots - from the echoes of Cantonese dialects to the aroma of tea shared across tables. These five films reflect Lingnan's humanity and its love for life. Through light and shadow, we hope to let friendship and culture flourish even more vividly."

Zhao also noted that the upcoming 2025 Guangzhou Film Expo, taking place this December, will continue to strengthen collaboration by being "market-oriented, audience-driven, and internationally connected" - part of China's broader ambition to build a globally influential film industry.

The evening concluded with the Malaysian premiere of "The Sun Rises on Us All" by Cai Shangjun, the first Guangdong-produced film ever selected for the Main Competition at the Venice Film Festival, where Xin Zhilei won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress. Director Huo Meng, whose film "Crossing the Border - Zhaoguan" is also part of the programme, attended the event to meet Malaysian audiences and share insights into his work.

Running from 12 to 16 November at GSC MyTOWN, the film week presents a diverse line-up including:
  1. "The Sun Rises on Us All" - directed by Cai Shangjun, which recently made waves at the Venice Film Festival, earning actress Xin Zhilei the prestigious Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her powerful performance.

  2. "Crossing the Border - Zhaoguan" - directed by Huo Meng, whose deeply human storytelling has gained acclaim across major international film festivals, including the Berlinale Silver Bear for his latest feature.

  3. "White Snake" - a distinctly Cantonese opera-inspired film, reinterpreting a beloved legend through Guangdong's theatrical artistry.

  4. "Back to Love" - a contemporary Teochew family drama exploring generational bonds and the emotional tapestry of diaspora.

  5. "Fall Into the Mortal World" - an acclaimed Cantonese animated feature that showcases the region's creative evolution and visual imagination.
