Gala night unveils "Telaga Suriram" and its mystical folklore

"Telaga Suriram" celebrated its gala premiere
29 Apr - The much-anticipated horror film "Telaga Suriram" celebrated its gala premiere at DADI Cinemas Pavilion Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, marking the culmination of three years of dedicated work by the production team.

Director Osman Ali - this being his 17th film as director - revealed that "Telaga Suriram" draws inspiration from age-old Malaysian folklore about mysterious wells that were believed to be haunted. "There are stories from the past that relate to beliefs about old wells that take human lives," he explained. The film centres around the mysterious disappearance of a child named Suriram, which leaves local villagers searching for answers.

"I wanted to bring an approach that explores the attitudes of people who are still attached to mythological beliefs that are part of our culture," Osman shared. This perspective gives "Telaga Suriram" a unique dimension compared to conventional horror films that rely solely on shock value.

The filmmaking journey wasn't without challenges. The production team selected traditional village locations that came with their own eerie backstories to create an authentic horror atmosphere. "The locations we chose all have their own mystical stories, with crew members reporting mysterious voices and feeling like they were being watched," Osman revealed. Shot over 45 days beginning in January 2022, the filming took place across various locations in Perlis, Kedah, and Perak.

Producer Yus Yusop explained that his fascination with folk stories rich in historical and mystical elements sparked the idea for the film. "This film underwent a very meticulous process from script development to post-production," Yus noted. "The three-year journey to completion was worth it, with quite impressive results."

The film features an impressive cast including Nabila Huda, Maya Karin, Scha Alyahya, Farid Kamil, Ellie Suriaty, and child actress Puteri Rafasya. The gala was also graced by Malaysia's national songstress Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza, who performed the film's soundtrack "Sesal."

Movie fans won't want to miss this captivating blend of horror and Malaysian cultural heritage when "Telaga Suriram" arrives in theaters nationwide on 1 May.
