22 May - The Beto Kusyairy-starrer "Gayong" is set to be watched by audiences in 33 Latin American countries soon. The news was shared by its producer, Eric Ong, saying that the international marketing representative of his company Movie Move has received such an offer during their appearance at the Cannes Film Festival. "They are very interested in films with elements of Asian martial arts, including silat," said Ong. "In fact, they were interested in Gayong and considered the film to be interesting and the production quality to be very good."
Ong said that he was informed that the interest was for the movie to be shown on OTT platform, though there has been no word on the release date. "Regardless, I am still proud that Gayong was able to penetrate the Latin American market. This proves that local films and silat have their own values and are admired globally," he added.
According to Ong, the process of preparing a contract agreement between the two parties is currently underway and is expected to be finalised in the near future. "Gayong" is inspired by the story of the grandmaster and founder of Pertubuhan Silat Seni Gayong Malaysia, Datuk Meor Abdul Rahman. It also co-stars Nabila Huda, Syafie Naswip and Indonesian action star, Yayan Ruhian.
